Quizzing with QUIZLET

Scientific terms seemed complicated and difficult to memorize and my class hours cannot be spent too much on studying these. I made various strategies to teach vocabularies in my Science class but most of the time, I failed to let my students engage actively in these activities. We did drawing, vocab pass, matching type, spelling quiz, pen and board game, charades and crossword puzzles. I feel bored and I know my students feel more bored than I am.

My students keep on telling me that scientific terms are difficult to memorize. Then how can they understand scientific concepts if they are not familiar with the necessary terms?

Dilemma sets in. I cannot spend much time discussing about vocabulary but I need to let my students have more interest in learning such. Then I learned about QUIZLET.

Since I started using Quizlet, my students felt more engaged in learning because they know more about the vocabulary words that we were using in Science class.

In a survey I conducted, 94% of my students enjoys using quizlet in class and as homework. 83% of them thinks they learn vocabulary words better using quizlet than in lectures. Among the Quizlet features, my students enjoy using Match, Flashcards and Quizlet Live.

I use Match to challenge my students to get highscores. And it’s really thrilling to see students trying to beat the highscores (even my scores).

Quizletlive gives an atmosphere of a friendly competition in our classroom. I use it as formative assessment that enhances not only their vocabulary skills but also develops their interpersonal skills and teamwork. The Flashcards is helpful in learning the terms and definitions and the voice/audio that reads the words really gives students more in-depth understanding as they are able to practice proper pronunciations.

I even noticed some of my reserved students were trying to get along with their classmates during Quizlet activities.

At the end of learning the terms, I asked my students to test themselves and retake until they get 100%. In this way, I can ascertain that they have learned most of the vocabulary words that were taught or will be taught in class.

My students are really positive in using Quizlet in the classroom. And I remember one of my class was even late for lunch because we were so ecstatic in playing Quizletlive.

As an educator, I learned to be more innovative and experimental in my class. And Quizlet is one among the thousands of apps I would recommend for teachers to use to assist students and enhance their vocabularies. Parents can also use this to personally practice their kids. It would be beneficial to language learners too.
