
Last May 12 and 13, the Egret Scholars, Suhyun Choi (Grade 11), Ariunsanaa Batbaatar (Grade 11) and Emil Steinke (Grade 9) participated for the first time in the Shenzhen Round of the World Scholar’s Cup. Held in Green Oasis School, the MXIS team competed in four events: Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge and Scholar’s Bowl. Topics of exploration, from human relationships and the history of diplomacy to black markets and the science of memory, was drawn from this year’s World Scholar’s Cup theme, An Entangled World.
Out of 21 schools, 46 teams and 138 students who participated in the Senior Division, the Egrets Scholars (Team 528) ranked 5th Overall team in the competition. The team ranked 2nd Top Challenge Team and 2nd Top Debate Team. The following are the team awards and individual awards the team got during the Shenzhen Round:

The World Scholar’s Cup brings together over 25,000 students in 50 countries every year. This tournament aims to inspire in young people of diverse culture a love of learning, a confidence in new skills, and a sense of global citizenship. It is an academic competition but it is different from other competitions, in that it is not just a competition but a celebration of learning. It engages students not only to gain but to share knowledge to others being more passionate about the different subject areas and appreciating innovative ideas. The preparation itself is a learning experience already. It was a truly rewarding experience for the students who are motivated to learn.
After qualifying from the Regional Round, the Egret Scholars will be competing at the Global Round in Melbourne Australia on August 17 to 21 among 5,000 Scholars from all over the world.
